Chicken Sambar Recipe

Sambar is a common dish in India especially southern regions of the country. Most of the houses and hotels have Sambar from the morning itself. Its a combination of different varieties of vegetables, lentils etc. Sambar is nutritious also.

Chicken sambar is a variety recipe in sambar recipes. it will be a variety taste for the chicken lovers.


Chicken - 500gm

Turdal - 3/4 cup

Shallots - 15

Onion - 2 ( cut into square pieces)

Tomato - 2

Green chilli - 4

Carrot - 1

Potato -2

Ginger -1 1/2 tsp (crushed)

Garlic -1 1/2tsp (crushed)

Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp

Red chilli Powder - 1 1/2 tsp

Coriander Powder - 1 1/4 tsp

Hing - 1/4 tsp

Curry leaves

Coriander leaves



water -2 cup

For Masala:

Fennel seeds - 1 tbs

Black pepper - 1/2 tsp

Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp

Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp

For seasoning:

Mustard seeds - 1tsp

Dried red chillies -4

Take a pressure cooker and add dal, chicken, potatoes, ginger, garlic, green chillies turmeric powder and salt and mix well. Add two cup of water and cook till one whistle.

After first whistle open the pressure cooker - add tomato, carrots, coriander powder, red chilli powder and water (if needed). Again cook for a whistle.

Meanwhile ,in a pan dry roast the masala( fennel seeds, black pepper , fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds) and grind to a smooth powder.

After the 2nd whistle , open the pressure cooker and add hing, coriander leaves and mix well.

Take another pan , add oil and splutter the mustard seeds. then add the ground masala powder , curry leaves and dried red chillies and roast well . Add this to the curry. Stir well.Chicken sambar is ready to be served. Coriander leaves and curry leaves can be added for a flavour.
