Duterte's eyes bought Bell helicopters from SoKor,

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte said Sunday the Philippine government is considering purchasing a Bell helicopter from South Korea to improve the ability of the Philippine Armed Forces.

"I went here, I tried, the day after, to buy a helicopter to ... we can see here in South Korea," Duterte said in his speech before nearly 2,000 Filipinos gathered at the Grand Hilton Hotel in Seoul.

Duterte is on a three-day visit to Seoul to further strengthen the Philippines-South Korea bilateral relationship, particularly on trade, investment and defense and security.

The Philippines should buy 23 helicopters from Canada but Duterte ordered the cancellation of a $ 234 million deal in February after the Canadian government stipulated that the helicopter should not be used for combat operations.

"You know, at first we had it. We ordered Bell (helicopter) from Canada. They say they will send a Bell helicopter but you can not use it against your own citizens, "said the President.

The Canadian government says helicopters should be used only for "air ambulances" but Duterte says the Philippines should protect its citizens from state enemies.

Duterte said the country also faces a national security problem, which he predicts, will remain in the next 10 to 15 years.

Meanwhile, the President expressed his gratitude to the South Korean government for treating well over 66,000 Filipinos living and working in Korea.

"I want to thank the (South Korean) government for accommodating so many Filipinos here and keeping them safe here," Duterte said.

Accompanied by members of his cabinet, Duterte was greeted by nearly 2,000 Filipinos who carried flags and cheers who shouted his name after the President was introduced by Foreign Minister Alan Peter Cayetano.

Duterte is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Blue House on Monday.

Both leaders will witness the signing of a major agreement on transportation, science and technology, trade and economic cooperation, and a loan agreement on the New Cebu International Container Port project.
